Industrial threaded rods

What is a threaded rod?

A threaded rod is a steel bar with a continuous external thread along its whole length. Unlike a bolt it has no head, so it is used with nuts and washers on both ends, or screwed into an anchor, coupling nut or tapped hole. Because it can be cut to any length, it is the standard choice for long fixings, suspensions and anchoring.

Metric threaded rod size chart (coarse thread)

In India, metric coarse threads (ISO) are the most common. The size number is the nominal outside diameter in millimetres.

Size Diameter (mm) Pitch (mm) Tapping drill (mm) M6 6 1.0 5.0 M8 8 1.25 6.8 M10 10 1.5 8.5 M12 12 1.75 10.2 M14 14 2.0 12.0 M16 16 2.0 14.0 M20 20 2.5 17.5 M24 24 3.0 21.0

Fine-pitch threads (for example M10 × 1.25) and inch threads such as BSW also exist, especially on older machinery. Always match the nut to the rod thread.

Common lengths

Threaded rods are commonly supplied in lengths such as 1 m, 2 m and 3 m and then cut to size on site. DIN 975 is a widely referenced standard for metric threaded rods.

Materials and finishes

Material / finish Best for MS, black or zinc plated General indoor use and fixtures Hot-dip galvanised (GI) Outdoor and humid locations Stainless steel 304 Corrosion resistance in general environments Stainless steel 316 Chemical, coastal and washdown areas High tensile (grade 8.8) Higher loads where specified by design

Hot-dip galvanised rods have a thicker zinc layer on the thread, so use nuts made for galvanised threads.

Common uses of threaded rods

•  Suspending pipes, cable trays and ducts from slabs or beams, with anchors
•  Supporting slotted channel frames and brackets
•  Anchoring machinery, base plates and structures
•  Clamping fixtures, jigs and assemblies
•  Extending fixings with coupling nuts

How to measure a threaded rod

•  Measure the outside diameter with a vernier caliper: about 10 mm means M10
•  Check the pitch with a thread gauge, or measure 10 mm along the rod and count the threads
•  Note the material and finish (black, zinc, galvanised, stainless)
•  Measure the length you need, or the number of pieces and cut length

Accessories you may also need

Hex nuts, washers, coupling nuts, anchor fasteners and channel nuts are commonly ordered with threaded rods. See our fasteners page.
