What is a slotted channel?
A slotted channel is a cold-formed C-shaped steel profile with inturned lips and a row of slots along its back. Channel nuts slide inside the lips and lock against them, so brackets, clamps and threaded rods can be bolted anywhere along the length. This makes it quick to build adjustable support systems on site, without welding.
Common slotted channel sizes
Profile (mm)
Typical use
41 × 41
Standard general-purpose profile for most supports
41 × 21
Lighter loads and tight spaces
41 × 82 (back-to-back)
Two 41 × 41 channels joined for higher loads
Wall thickness is commonly in the range of about 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm, and lengths of 2 m, 3 m and 6 m are common. Exact dimensions vary by manufacturer, so confirm them when ordering.
Types of slotted channel
• Slotted: continuous slots for maximum adjustability
• Half slotted: slots on part of the length or a smaller slot pattern
• Plain: no slots, for a cleaner look or drilled-to-suit fixing
• Back-to-back (double): two channels joined for strength

Common applications
• Electrical cable tray and conduit supports
• HVAC duct and chiller pipe supports
• Plumbing and fire-fighting pipe hangers
• Solar panel mounting structures
• Equipment frames, racks and wall brackets
Accessories used with slotted channel
• Channel nuts (spring nuts) in M6 to M12 sizes
• Threaded rods and hex nuts for drop supports
• Brackets, angle cleats and base plates
• Beam clamps for fixing to steel beams without drilling
• Pipe clamps and end caps
How to choose the right slotted channel
• Load and span: heavier loads or longer spans may need a thicker or back-to-back channel
• Environment: GP indoors, HDG or stainless outdoors and in corrosive areas
• Accessories: make sure nuts, brackets and clamps match the channel profile
• Length: order standard lengths and cut on site, or ask for cut pieces
Slotted channel vs slotted angle
Slotted angle is an L-shaped perforated section mainly used for shelving and racks. Slotted channel is a C profile with lips that accept channel nuts, designed for adjustable support systems.
